Fostering a love for Sports

National Sports Day, observed on August 29,commemorates the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the legendary “Wizard of Hockey” who won three Olympic gold medals for India.

It serves as the day when the President of India confers top national honors like the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, Arjuna Awards, and Dronacharya Awards to exceptional athletes and coaches.

It raises awareness about the need for daily physical activity and drives mass fitness initiatives like the Fit India Mission, encouraging citizens to spend time playing sports and exercising.

A New Era for Indian Sports

Indian sport is witnessing a remarkable transformation. From the Olympics to world championships and Paralympics, Indian athletes are consistently proving that they can win on the global stage. The country’s achievements are no longer confined to traditional sports like hockey and cricket. Athletes are making their mark in badminton, athletics, wrestling, boxing, shooting, table tennis, para sports, chess and many other disciplines.

Behind these successes lies a significant shift in the nation’s sporting ecosystem. Government initiatives such as the Khelo India Programme, the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS ) have enhanced training facilities. State Governments sponsor and support sportspersons through structured welfare policies, direct financial assistance, and dedicated employment quotas.

Corporate India has also emerged as a key partner in this journey. Through sponsorships, scholarships, leagues and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, businesses are investing in athletes from an early age and creating opportunities that were once difficult to access.

Families today are increasingly willing to support children who wish to pursue professional sports, recognising that dedication and talent can lead to rewarding careers, international recognition and financial security.

The rise of Indian women athletes and para-athletes has been particularly inspiring. Their achievements have demonstrated that excellence knows no gender or physical limitation. Their victories have become symbols of resilience, determination and national pride.
National Sports Day celebrates not only the legends but the promising sports persons who will take nation to greater heights.
